I love this quote because it points out that good is often just a mask people wear. Masks are designed to project an image other than the one it covers. Realness is naked and raw. We are unable to hide our real selves indefinitely because we are all naked underneath. I want to see the scars and let mine show because real is better than pretend good.

Abuse is an unfortunate reality in this world and is more than physical assault. The invisible trauma we suffer can result in chronic illness, which is a relentless beast gnawing away at the soundness of mind. Education and support from others are vital in the healing journey.

Love this Sara. It’s hard to find a real person because so many are trying to project what others think they should be. When I find a real person, I try to keep them around.

Absolutely love this! People so often change once you get to know them, and I don’t like that. If that is who you are, that is the person I should have seen from the beginning. Like you, I prefer real.

Absolutely! I’m really interested by people’s masks because although they are a projection of the way we want to be seen, the edited, good and perfected image, there is always the inconsistency in that image too. We think that we are hiding behind our mask but in truth, the inconsistency is there revealed, naked and raw. It’s a kind of paradox. In some ways the mask says more about us, than what we consider to be our ‘deep personal truth’ …

I agree, the mask is “the way we want to be seen” and can give insight into the true self.

I’m depressed and anxious a lot of the time, and when I meet people, particularly strangers, I often wear a mask to cover up the real me. It’s become second nature. There are only a handful of people around whom I don’t wear a mask. I guess I need to work on that. It’s okay to not be okay.

The mask can be protective as you describe and I have used a mask in that same way. I think it would be a huge relief to be comfortable enough with all my flaws to discard the mask, once and for all, and just be myself.

I think sometimes I prefer to wear a mask because I don’t always want people to see me real. I don’t really like people, hence the agoraphobia. 🙂 I will let people see me real if I feel they are someone I want to know me as real. Considering I don’t like most people, that isn’t a lot. lol. Now dogs, yes, they have melt in a puddle of love as soon as I see them! 😀

I can relate to wanting to protect oneself from others we are unsure of. Dogs see right through our masks. I’ve learned to be careful around people my dog doesn’t like because she is kindhearted and loves unconditionally. If she doesn’t like someone there is probably a very good reason.

That is so true! I trust my dogs judgement before I trust a person’s. they just know.
